Integration of patriotic education into the development of foreign language professional communicative competence in technical university students (the case of English)

Abstract. The study aims to present a set of exercises designed for the patriotic education of technical university students within the framework of developing foreign language professional communicative competence. This is demonstrated through the study of the topic “The Russian Federation” in the “Foreign Language” course (English), using the Saint Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University) as an example. The article examines the theoretical foundations for integrating patriotic education into foreign language teaching at a technical university, substantiates the principles for selecting and organizing educational content, and presents the structure and methodological tools of the developed set of exercises using one of four thematic modules as an example. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development and piloting of a set of English language exercises for technical university students, organized into four thematic modules: “Notable Wonders of Russia”, “The First in Everything”, “Exploring the Unknown”, and “The Russian Cultural Code”. This set ensures the integration of patriotic education into the formation of students’ foreign language professional communicative competence. Unlike existing studies where the content and organizational forms of patriotic education are often described fragmentarily, this work proposes a unified module structure. This allows for the purposeful development of students’ spiritual and moral values within the natural educational process. The content of the exercises is specifically oriented toward technical university students, which is reflected in the focus on the scientific and technological achievements of Soviet and Russian scientists. As a result of the study, it was established that the developed methodological structure of the thematic modules ensures the organic integration of patriotic education into the language learning process. The piloting of the exercises at the Saint Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University) confirmed high emotional involvement among students, an expansion of their knowledge regarding Russia’s geographical, scientific, technological, and cultural heritage, and the successful realization of interdisciplinary links between the “Foreign Language” course and geography, history, and cultural studies.
