Abstract. In the article the modern trends of studying the interrelation of language and culture and also the role of onyms in the translation of background cultural knowledge for English-speaking pupils are considered. The author gives the review of the ways of the representation of proper name in leading modern textbooks for foreigners who study Russian and reveals the basic areas of cultural knowledge presented by the authors of the textbooks with the help of onyms.
