EVOLUTION OF ARTICLE SYSTEM IN THE FRENCH AND ARABIC LANGUAGES

Abstract.
The author conducts the comparative-typological analysis of article meanings evolution in two contrasting languages – French and Arabic, ascertains that in these languages, as in most known languages, the category of definiteness precedes the origin of the category of indefiniteness, shows the features of each language further evolution, and comes to the conclusion that in the Arabic language it is possible to reveal the Indo-European typological mechanism of transition from the rhematic-thematic organization of nominal group to thematic-rhematic construction.
