PLACES OF MEMORY IN CONTEMPORARY FRENCH NOVEL

Abstract.
The article analyzes the genre features of a variety of modern family novel, which French critics call “ roman de filiation ”, by the example of the novels “French Life” of Jean-Paul Dubois and “Unconsciousness” of Thierry Hesse. The article shows that the conception of “Realms of Memory” developed by Pierre Nora can be applied to these novels. Due to the recursive effect ( mise en abîme ) the novel itself, its narrator, and the space of memories created by him become “Realms of Memory”, bound together by narration. This allows, according to Paul Ricoeur, telling that personal and national identities are simultaneously formed in novels.
