Abstract. The article is devoted to the synthesis of the basic layer of the concepts smell and ис used on the experimental basis. Association experiment allows revealing common and differential features in the reactions of the English and Tatar cultures bearers to the word stimulus ( smell – for the English, ис – for the Tatars). Basing on the results, the conclusions about ethnic identity in relation to such basic human feeling as sense of smell are made. The reactions of respondents have significant differences despite the universal nature of the notion “smell”.
