Abstract.
The article is devoted to the problem of naming from the ancient times to this day. The author describes the regulations and methods of naming in the ancient times, its goals and tasks. The paper provides examples of representation of Roman names on solid supports: tombstones, walls, arches, trees. With a view of decoding the personal abbreviations in the Roman texts and also investigating and adequate interpretation of the meaning of these abbreviations the article provides examples from the living monuments of Latin epigraphy, and also texts from other sources: letters, documents, fiction.
