Abstract. The article considers the problem of grammatical doublet nature of full and contracted forms of semi-modal verbs, which synchronously function in the English language, and they are the result of grammaticalization process. The realization of the potential of grammatical doublet nature generates the problem of etymons and neologisms identity and also conditions the conflict of competing doublet forms, which resolution contains the prospects of synchronous variability elimination.
