Abstract. The article considers the problem of narrative in early Chekhov’s prose. Two large Chekhov’s texts were selected as the material for analysis - an idyllic in tone story “Green Spit” (1882) and “a criminal novel” “Hunting Drama” (1884). The comparison of works allows concluding that, using the same techniques, Chekhov changes their role in forming the narrative structure and thus transforms the impression that the work should leave.
