Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of functioning of the fantastic images in the dramaturgic trilogy by A. V. Sukhovo-Kobylin "Scenes from the Past". Dramatist’s appeal to the fantasy as a technique allows realizing full artistic potential of grotesque and developing traditional grotesque motives - eschatological, mortification of living, fragmentation of the whole. In addition fantastic images reveal the possibility for transforming the historical and cultural model of grotesque (the tragic into the absurdist).
