Abstract.
The article is based on the data of authoritative researches of the modern scientists-linguists addressing the problem of semantics of a word, its nominative and evaluative function. The paper also examines the problems of interaction of a colloquial language with a literary language, provides examples of colloquial units in the works by American authors of the XX century which allows identifying the peculiarities and functions typical for colloquial language.
