Abstract.
The mechanism of the process of translation is determined by the search for the meanings of an original text. The article reveals the content of the conception “modal meaning” which is a key one while translating a piece of literature. Comparative analysis of the transposition of the modal meaning of the original into the English language is carried out by the example of the poem by N. V. Gogol “Dead Souls” and three English translations of this work.
