Abstract.
The article examines onomatopoeias as units of the linguistic expression and a special type of word creation, the definition of the onomatopoeia is given; classifications of onomatopoeic words by different features are systematized; the polysemy of onomatopoeias and phraseological units based on onomatopoeic units are studied; onomatopoeic words as the centers of further word building are examined, and also the words of special structure - reduplicates.
