Abstract. The article deals with the topical issues of teaching control and assessment activity, particularly testing, to students-philologists. The content of teaching is identified; its basic principles are grounded. The role of testing in the system of the modern methods of the control and assessment of the knowledge and skills of students concerning the Russian language and literature is ascertained.
