Abstract.
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of abbreviation in the speech of cadets of a military institution of higher education. By the material of the language of official documents, professional and jargon vocabulary the functions of abbreviation, the peculiarities of its usage in the military sphere are defined; the activity of entering abbreviations from the language of official papers into the oral speech is noted. While using abbreviation in the jargon of cadets the elements of language game are singled out, the means and techniques of its creation are examined.
