EVIDENTIALITY AND EPISTEMIC MODALITY IN SEMANTICS OF PARTICLES AND THEIR COMPATIBILITY WITH MODAL WORDS (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE GERMAN MODAL PARTICLES WOHL, DOCH AND JA)

Abstract.
The article considers the categorical meanings of modality conveyed by the modal particles of the German language ja, doch and wohl . It is shown that these words encode both the semantics of evidentiality and epistemic modality. Certain laws of modal particles and modal words compatibility are mentioned: modal particles are placed before modal words, the cases of their use after modal words are rare and are caused either by the narrowing of the particles scopus, or the speaker’s attempt to moderate the categorical nature of the statements expressed by a modal word.
