Abstract. The article considers antithesis as a means of the objectivation of the cognitive potential of the main characters’ images in the novel by I. Shaw “Rich Man, Poor Man”. It is stated that antithesis plays the leading role in the interpretation of the images of the main characters and the implementation of the author’s intention. It should be emphasized that due to antithesis the composition structure of the literary work is formed and the cognitive potential of the images of the main characters is revealed.
