Abstract. For the purpose of understanding the contemporary state of prose the article focuses on the peculiarities of the world of childhood in L. Ulitskaya’s stories. The collection of stories “The girls” recreates the cultural atmosphere of the epoch, reflects the author's view of the literary situation in the new millennium. The consideration of the peculiarities of the writer’s artistic world in the aspect of poetics contributes to the identification of the essential features of the contemporary prose, enables to look at the world of a child in a completely different way.
