Abstract.
The article is devoted to the studying the correlation of polysemantic word meanings as a specific microsystem, in which these meanings are interconnected and interdependent. The correlation between direct and indirect meanings of a polysemantic word is examined. The author pays attention to the criteria of hierarchical arrangement of meanings in the lexical-semantic structure, including the degree of word meanings independence, frequency of use, their independence from context. The paper highlights that figurative meanings of words aren’t less functional than direct.
