“EVENING LIGHTS” BY A. A. FET: “ART FOR ART’S SAKE” OR PRE-SYMBOLISM?

Abstract.
The article examines the complicated creative development of A. A. Fet, the reasons for contradictory perception of his collections of 1840, 1850, 1856, 1863 and, first of all, ambiguous evaluation of “Evening Lights” of the 1880s - the beginning of the 1890s. The paper focuses on analyzing the meaningful and artistic peculiarities of the “Evening Lights” series, themes, motives, images, ideas of the collection, which, on the one hand, were in tune with pre-symbolism conceptions and, on the other hand, evidently suited the “art for art’s sake” esthetics. The paper concludes on Fet’s poetical talent development, identifies the esthetic dominants of the late period of his creative work.
