THE ACCULTURATION PROCESS IN LOCAL/REGIONAL VARIANTS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract.
Functioning of English in different sociolinguistic and sociocultural contexts gives rise to various regional and local variants of the English language. Each of these variants is culturally marked and is able to reflect the cultural values, customs and traditions of the local society. The article discusses the process of acculturation by the example of the language situation in South Korea. The examples given by the author in the paper, confirm the ability of each regional variant of the English language to act as a conduit of native culture and mirror of local identity.
