Abstract.
The detective novel by William Godwin "Caleb Williams" occupies a special place in the history of literature of the UK. The writer originally intended this work for elitist public that made up the traditional circle of fiction readers in the XIX century, hoping to describe sympathetically the life of ordinary people to these readers. However, later the readership of the novel expanded, the book became popular among general readers of the XIX century, and it was the commercial success and a sample of mass literature for both publishers and other writers.
