CONSIDERING THE SPECIFICITY OF J. R. R. TOLKIEN’S ONOMASTIC SPACE WHEN TRANSLATING TOPONYMS

Abstract.
The article is devoted to examining the specificity of J. R. R. Tolkien’s onomastic space by the example of the novels “The Lоrd оf the Rings” and “The Hobbit, or There and Bаck Аgаin”. The author describes the different ways of translating toponyms from the mentioned works into Russian and analyzes their specific features taking into account the presence/absence of implicit meaning. To transfer the expressiveness, emotiveness and evaluative nature of toponyms in the translated fantasy text the translator should apply creative approach when creating occasionalisms regarding their implicit meanings and in stylistic adaptation involving the use of different translation techniques, such as: calque, omission and addition of words, onymic substitution, semantic development and logical synonymy.
