Abstract. The article investigates the economic discourse of the crisis period in the context of the theory of conceptual integration. Particular attention is paid to the metaphorical understanding of crisis as a natural phenomenon. According to the analysis results, the image of such a complex phenomenon as the economic crisis is formed in media texts largely due to conceptual metaphor that contributes to the implementation of the author’s strategies and allows representing recession as this or that natural phenomenon. In the majority of cases the crisis is compared to water in different states. The formation of the metaphor “crisis is natural phenomenon” involves such conceptual characteristics as “uncertainty”, “unexpectedness”, “obscurity”, “unpredictability”, “fear”, “damage”. The basis of metaphorical blends ‘crisis is bad weather”, “crisis is flood” and so on is a deep metaphor FALIURE is DANGER.
