Abstract.
The rapid pace of our life determines the tendency for linguistic economy which stimulates abbreviation formation. The article is devoted to identifying the specificity of political abbreviation formation in the modern German language. The research findings allow the author to conclude that the most productive abbreviation type is initial abbreviation among which three-letter and acoustic abbreviations prevail.
