Abstract. In the article the need to study phraseology is substantiated, and the description of the basic functions of phraseological units in the language is given. The main attention in the work is paid to the research of phraseological expressions, which belong to the Middle Ages according to their etymology. The authors analyze the phraseological units from the point of view of the realization of their functions in the language, describing the origin of their meanings, as well as the images with which they are associated.
