Abstract. The article deals with the interrelation of narrative modes with various focuses of observation. In the light of J. Moeschler’s ideas, three modes of narrative are considered. They are a non-perceptual narrative, an internally focused narrative, and an externally perceptual narrative. Each mode of narrative is expressed by certain tense forms, implying a definite focus of observation. Preterite, implicating the meaning of integrity, represents the narrative as a move forward in time outside the focus of observation. The meaning of process nature and incompleteness of the imperfect presupposes an observer recording a stage of the described process. The meaning of precedence of pluperfect implies the summing up at the time of observation.
