Abstract.
The article is devoted to analyzing snowstorm image as a representation of mental state of the main character of B. Pasternak’s novel “Doctor Zhivago”. Snowstorm image in this literary work is not only closely associated with personage’s destiny but symbolic and polysemantic. On the one hand, snowstorm and the related meteorological phenomena (blizzard, wind, snow) personify grief, suffering, death of personage’s relatives and, accordingly, personages’ internal confusion and anxiety. On the other hand, snowstorm image (especially in the context of opposition to flame, fire) symbolizes the birth of new creative element which is represented in the novel by candle image. The snowstorm image is also directly associated with Intercession holiday implementing the conception of salvation and resurrection.
