THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE SUBCLASSES OF OLD ENGLISH NOUN IN THE FUNCTION OF SUBJECT IN QUALIFICATIVE AND DENOTATIVE STRUCTURES

Abstract.
The article deals with the distribution of subclasses of nouns in the function of subject in Old English, taking into account the various syntactic structures by the material of the texts of “The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle” and “The Lives of the Saints”. The aim of the research is to reveal the degree of functioning of various subclasses of noun in the role of subject in Old English. Two syntactic structures - denotative and qualificative ones - have been chosen for the analysis. The results of the analysis have shown that in the studied material the type of sentence does not have a significant effect on the function of subject, the filling of the position of subject with specific nouns in both structures, while the abstract nouns constitute the minimum degree of representation, is typical.
