Abstract.
Studying gender discourse of the Russian ХIХ-century classics refers to the relevant problems of contemporary Russian literary criticism. Of great interest in this aspect are the chronotope of the Caucasian war and the phenomenon of frontier indicating the clash of two civilizations: representatives of the Russian Empire and Caucasian mountain societies. How is the functional role of Slavic (Russian) women in the history of this confrontation represented in literary texts? By the material of L. N. Tolstoy’s story the author tries to answer this question. The writer depicts in detail two Russian women (Marya Vasilyevna, Marya Dmitrievna), each of whom can rise “above the conflict”. The distinctive features of these heroines are mercy, compassion, kindness towards the mountaineers, readiness to establish a cultural dialogue. The images of Marya Vasilyevna and Marya Dmitrievna embody the best feminine features of the Russian people.
