Abstract.
The tasks of historical lexicology include studying the ways of the semantic evolution of the language nominative means. One of the relevant problems is the peculiarities of polysemy in ancient languages. The article is devoted to the analysis of the semantics of the Old English adjectives-antonyms hefig and leoht . By the material of the Old English language works and lexicographic sources, the semantic possibilities of the adjectives under consideration are analyzed on the basis of the peculiarities of their combinability. The authors specify those integral components that connect the meanings of these adjectives.
