ON THE PROBLEM OF DEFINING THE NOTION “LINGUISTIC ISLAND”

Abstract.
The article examines different interpretations of the notion “linguistic island” from the viewpoint of linguistics and sociolinguistics in order to identify the most accurate definition. The author analyzes different extra- and intra-linguistic factors allowing reliable identification of specificity of linguistic islands considering their secondary nature, potentials to accelerate the development and transformation of previous dialect systems. The basic research traditions are described.
