Abstract.
The study is conducted within the framework of decoding stylistics. The paper focuses on studying the techniques to emphasize the meanings significant for the author in O. Henry’s stories. Among such techniques the researchers identify the following ones: convergence, repetition, effect of frustrated expectation. The research findings indicate that emphasis is created by different phonetic, lexical, syntactical, stylistic means which testifies to O. Henry’s mastery as a representative of the American school of a short story.
