Abstract.
The article is devoted to the theme of the decay in the early novellas about the childhood by the Russian emigration writer I. S. Shmelyov. For the analysis the author selects the works “Servants of Truth”, “Decay” and “Into a New Life”, written in 1906-1907, depicting the process of destruction of moral principles and family values. The image of a suffering child, which is central to the stories, reflects most clearly the depth of the problem. The writer points out the reasons for the decay, suggests ways to solve the problem, and contemplates on the importance of man’s spiritual life, the need to follow the ideals of kindness, love and mercy that are bestowed by God.
