PUNCTUATION SYSTEM OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE: HISTORY AND MODERN STATE

Abstract.
The article examines the development of the French punctuation and analyzes the functioning of script opposition in a literary text by the material of the works of modern French authors awarded with literary prizes. Focusing on modern punctuation marks the paper considers the peripheral mark “script” with the semantic, syntactic and prosodic features of nuclear punctuation marks. The analysis results allow the author to conclude that script opposition performs different functions in the text participating in the process of text generation. The research findings indicate that the modern French punctuation undergoes changes.
