LANDSCAPE FUNCTIONS IN J. GRACQ’S CREATIVITY (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE NOVEL “THE CASTLE OF ARGOL”)

Abstract.
The article is devoted to understanding the functions of landscape in the works by the French writer J. Gracq. A special role assigned to the landscape descriptions in his works has given a foundation to many literary critics to classify him as a landscape artist. At the same time, J. Gracq’s landscape is not of a decorative, but of a sense-forming character and can be stratified on the basis of functionality. By the material of the novel “The Castle of Argol” the author studies the landscape used by the writer as an instrument element of psychological analysis, and also as a key stylistic, compositional and plot element. J. Gracq attaches particular importance when working with landscape descriptions to the metaphysical characteristics of natural symbolism, designed to consider landscape from a new angle, revealing new images and motives.
