LEXICAL PECULIARITIES OF THE OLD CZECH TRANSLATION OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN IN THE PRAGUE BIBLE (1488)

Abstract. The article analyses lexical peculiarities of the first printed Czech Bible - the Prague Bible (1488) - in comparison with handwritten translations. The author describes historical and cultural context of the 4th Bible version. The study focuses on the problem of a special theological approach adopted among the Utraquist translators. The author concludes that though the target text is in tune with the previous translation tradition, it contains a number of innovations (explanations of word meanings, vocabulary of modern everyday life, variability of translation, careful approach to translating theological notions).
