Abstract.
The article examines the means to express intensity as a speech influence characteristic that manifests itself in statements of the politicians participating in the Russian-language and English-language socio-political debates. Speech influence in socio-political debates is for the first time analysed through the lenses of the category of intensity, in the aspect of tactical and strategic arrangement of linguistic units and in the aspect of the theory of argumentation. The conclusions are made that the components of socio-political debates as a special speech influence genre possess certain characteristics that emphasize the discourse agent’s speech influence and are directly associated with the category of intensity.
