Abstract.
The study aims to determine peculiarities of narrative and argumentative types of discourse through the lens of M. Halliday’s systemic functional analysis. The article describes resulting models for distribution of processes in narrative and argumentative types of discourse, gives a comparative analysis of distribution of processes in the two types of discourse. Scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that M. Halliday’s systemic functional analysis is for the first time applied to discourse analysis. It has been found that while there is a resemblance between models for frequency of processes in narrative and argumentative types of discourse, models for distribution of processes in the two genres are substantially different.
