Aleksandr Ivanovich Demchenko

Submitted: October 10, 2022
Abstract. The paper is devoted to one of the brightest phenomena of medieval Western European literature – goliardic poetry. The literary tradition under consideration is characterised by its sharp opposition to dogmatic scholasticism and “high” poetry, basis in colloquial speech. The author identifies the distinctive features of the ideological and thematic content of goliardic poetry: rejection of hierarchy; freedom from religious dogma, proverbial morality; vivid depiction of student life; motifs of “rampant life”; eulogisation of the joys of being; denunciation of social vices, covetousness of the church, the world order as a whole.
