The influence of natural written language of the internet space on Russian punctuation (a case study of the dash)

Abstract.
The aim of this research is to describe the influence of the weakening of orthological control in the spontaneous written language of the media space on the overall punctuation literacy of the younger generation. The designated problem is considered in the article using the example of the dash. The reasons and consequences of the partial or complete abandonment of the use of the dash in the texts of modern means of communication are identified. Data from a survey and experiment conducted in 2025 at Murmansk Arctic University are presented. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, the features of modern natural written language are described in terms of their conditionality by extralinguistic factors characteristic of the last two decades. The following results were obtained during the study: the frequency of use of the dash by representatives of the younger generation, both when typing text on a smartphone and in handwritten text, is low. The decrease in the overall activity of dash usage in natural written language is due to the specifics of using this sign on the smartphone keyboard. The need to switch to a second symbol layout to include a dash in the text creates inconvenience and hinders maintaining the high speed of communication adopted in the internet space. Since young people spend a significant part of their time in informal written contact mediated by smartphones, this forms certain speech habits in the youth environment and affects the overall level of punctuation literacy.
