Deconstruction of the “keeper of the hearth” role in A. Vampilov’s dramaturgy: chronotope, performativity, and the symbolism of everyday life

Abstract. The research aims to identify the mechanisms of artistic deconstruction of the “keeper of the hearth” archetype in A. Vampilov’s play “Duck Hunting” (1967) through the analysis of the symbolism of domestic space, gender performance, and the role of male characters as agents of the patriarchal system. The paper employs a comprehensive approach combining gender analysis (J. Butler’s concept of performativity), deconstruction (J. Derrida), and the chronotopic method (M. Bakhtin). The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it identifies for the first time: 1) mechanisms for inverting traditional symbols of the home (the mirror as a panopticon, the blanket as a materialization of unpaid labor); 2) patterns of failure of the heroines’ gender performance; 3) strategies for reproducing patriarchy through everyday practices. The study concludes that Vampilov carries out a radical critique of the archetype not through didactics, but through the poetics of everyday life, transforming the apartment into a chronotope of alienation. It is proven that the playwright artistically comprehends phenomena that later received theoretical formulation in Judith Butler’s works on the social construction of gender roles, exposing the dead-end of both following the traditional role and the illusory rejection of it within the patriarchal structure.
