Abstract.
The study aims to establish the relationship between the speech characteristics and the internal content (personal qualities and motives, ethno-cultural identity and social status, internal conflicts, etc.) of characters in a fantasy genre literary work. The study was conducted using English-language material from the original text of J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of lexical-semantic markers, syntactic constructions, and stylistic features of the characters’ speech, which made it possible to establish and systematize the patterns of verbal representation of their ethno-social and individual identity. The scientific originality of the research lies in identifying linguistic characteristics that form a collective portrait of characters in Tolkien’s novel, as well as in a complex, synthesized approach to decoding the linguistic personality of individual and collective character portraits in fantasy discourse to identify both general linguistic parameters of the characters’ verbal self-expression and the specifics of the author’s narrative. As a result of the study, a specific arsenal of interrelated linguo-stylistic devices in English, used by the author to reflect the unique features of the individual-psychological and ethno-cultural portrait of a given character, has been established for each character.
