Features of the Russian-language adaptation of the English literary fairy tale of the Golden Age (based on George MacDonald’s fairy tale “The Princess and the Goblin”)

Abstract.
This study aims to identify the features of the adaptation of the English literary fairy tale of the Golden Age when translated into Russian. The study analyses four Russian translations of George MacDonald’s fairy tale “The Princess and the Goblin”. The article covers three types of adaptation: pragmatic, stylistic, and linguocultural. Key translation techniques are identified for each type of adaptation. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the first comprehensive demonstration of the distinctive features of three types of adaptation on the basis of several translations of the English literary fairy tale of the Golden Age. The study reveals that the biggest difficulties in pragmatic adaptation arise when translating charactonyms (significant proper names), pet names, and authorial comparisons. Moreover, pragmatic adaptation requires the most creative approach from the translator. Stylistic adaptation mainly focuses on translating archaic words and outdated grammatical constructions, complex sentences, and graphic means of expression. Linguocultural adaptation addresses realia, the translation of which causes certain difficulties due to their vivid national coloring. The preferred strategy for translating realia is domestication.
