Abstract. This research is devoted to a comparative analysis of artistic imagery in Alfred Tennyson’s poem “The Lady of Shalott” and its Russian translation by K. D. Balmont. The purpose of the research is to identify the characteristics of how the original’s artistic and imaginative distinctiveness is conveyed in the translation from English into Russian. The scientific novelty of the research lies in examining the system of artistic images in the original poem in comparison with earlier materials of the Arthurian myth – from early Welsh poetry to Thomas Malory’s compilation – and in identifying potential parallels with these works; the system of images in the translated version of the poem is examined through a combination of comparative-contrastive translation analysis and cultural-historical analysis. In doing so, K. D. Balmont’s artistic and aesthetic views on the characteristics of literary translation, as articulated by him, were taken into account. The results of the research showed that K. D. Balmont employed a strategy of localization – and carried out a consistent adaptation of the poem’s artistic and imagery-based content to the Russian-speaking cultural space. The translation of the poem can be perceived as an independent, authorial interpretation, as significant changes occur in the system of images of the original and the connection with the source corpus of the “Arthurian Cycle” is disrupted.
