The influence of cognitive style on the nature of associative links (based on polysemous words)

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the influence of an individual's cognitive style – specifically object and spatial imagery and verbal abilities – on the nature of verbal associations and the actualization of polysemous word meanings. The article discusses data from a free association experiment and results from a diagnostic assessment of cognitive preferences using the Object-Spatial Imagery and Verbal Questionnaire (OSIVQ). Using correlation analysis, the study explores the extent to which individual cognitive strategies influence the type and semantics of reactions under the conditions of an associative experiment. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the application of a validated theoretical model, which posits the existence of three relatively independent modes of cognitive information processing, to the empirical study of the internal lexicon. The study establishes that participants with high scores in object imagery produce more syntagmatic associations compared to other participants, indicating a reliance on holistic situational images when processing verbal information. Additionally, the influence of spatial imagery on the number of concrete-sensory reactions was identified.
