Floral imagery in Kate Bernheimer’s Gold sisters trilogy

Abstract.
The study aims to identify the author’s specific use of floral imagery in the Gold sisters trilogy by the contemporary American writer Kate Bernheimer. The article examines the floral semantics of the trilogy’s heroines’ names, the floral symbolism of the peritexts, and the intertextual connections with fairy tales containing plant imagery. The scientific originality lies in the first-ever examination of floral symbolism in Bernheimer’s novel trilogy, revealing its role in the concept of an illustrated “collection of fairy tales” and determining allusive references to literary and pictorial texts. As a result of the study, a connection was established between the floral semantics of the name Merry Gold (“marigold”) and the symbolic meaning enshrined in popular 19th century floriographic publications, the legend “Mary’s Glass” from the collection of the Brothers Grimm, and the illustration by J. Grandville “Scabieuse & Souci”. The significance of peritexts (paintings by D. Tanning, illustrations from books by E. Gordon and F. S. Matthews) for the floral imagery of the trilogy has been proven. The unifying significance of the Brothers Grimm’s “A Riddling Tale” for the trilogy’s system of floral symbols is revealed.
