Small genres of Russian prose in the Internet space

Abstract.
The purpose of the study is to identify the uniqueness of small genres of fiction created for online publication. Critics and literary theorists who have addressed this issue have noted the diversity of genre strategies, experiments with genre boundaries, and the emergence of new genre varieties: a quest novel, an online diary, and a blog novel. The authors of the article establish that intensification of genre transformation/modification above all takes place in small forms of online prose. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time the genre features of the works created for the Internet by Denis Dragunsky, John Shemyakin, Dmitry Danilov were described and systematized. Genre-forming elements of these authors’ texts take primary focus. Genre modifications of the novel, diary, and travel notes are demonstrated using intertextual and narratological analysis. The research identified that the texts created for writers’ blogs and online publications are distinguished by an attitude towards the anecdotization of narrative (D. Dragunsky), the dominance of style over plot (J. Shemyakin), the illusive documentary effect (D. Danilov). A special communicative situation that minimizes the distance between the author and the reader contributes to the perception of the text as an “open work”, incomplete and nonlinear. Genre synthesis is becoming a distinctive feature of short prose created in the digital age.
