Verbalization of art in artistic comics: a linguosemiotic aspect (based on the German-language comic “Albrecht Dürer”)

Abstract. The study aims to identify the specific interaction between verbal and non-verbal semiotic systems within the genre of artistic comics dedicated to the work of Albrecht Dürer. The article employs an integrative method for analyzing verbal and non-verbal modalities, synthesizing M. A. K. Halliday’s metafunctional hypothesis, G. Kress and T. van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory, and the theory of intermediality. The scientific novelty lies in the first-ever identification and characterization of mechanisms for representing art within the hybrid genre of comics as a unique form of scientific popularization. The article describes methods of adapting art historical concepts for child and adolescent audiences (simplification of the informational code, use of comparisons drawn from the reader’s current experience, and emotionally charged vocabulary). As a result of the study, it is proven that comics serve not only as a carrier of art historical information but also as a tool for art interpretation, which is reflected in the choice of a dominant interactive meta-function and a synthetic type of intermediality. The findings contribute to linguosemiotics and multimodal theory.
