“Quand même” as a marker of emotional evaluation and communicative strategy in internet memes

Abstract.
The article considers how the French adverbial unit “quand même” functions in such a specific genre of digital communication as an Internet meme. The aim of this study is to identify the pragmatic functions of the adverbial unit “quand même” in modern French-language Internet memes. In this kind of use, however, it expresses a very wide range of emotions: admiration, indignation, irony, self-irony, and humility. At the same time, this unit performs an important social function: it acts as a marker of group identity and encodes a “French” view of the situation, while creating an effect of communicative solidarity among users. The scientific novelty of this work is determined by a new aspect of studying the functioning of the unit “quand même” in the specific context of Internet memes. For the first time, the following pragmatic functions have been identified: the function of creating an ironic pun through interaction with a visual model, the function of establishing communicative solidarity through the use of a cultural code, as well as the function of the attribution of a certain speech image of the author of the meme. The results showed that in the context of text-image interaction, “quand même” transforms from a conversational token into an emotional evaluation and implements an effective communication strategy. The use of a common cultural code allows this particle to be regarded as an important marker of the “digital Francophone space”.
