Word creation as a system-forming factor of Zinaida Gippius’s individual style

Abstract.
The aim of this study is to identify the functional characteristics of individual authorial innovations in the poetic language of Zinaida Gippius. The author’s words are systematized based on their parts of speech, derivational formants, and word-formation methods. The research’s novelty lies in its proposal of a comprehensive typology of Zinaida Gippius’s uniquely authorial innovations and the identification of their system-forming role in the poet’s individual style. For the first time, lexical innovations are interpreted in relation to the poet’s philosophical and religious doctrines, with distinctive word-formation patterns revealed at different stages of her creative work. The results of the study allow us to conclude that Zinaida Gippius’s word-creation, while remaining within the framework of conventional word-formation models, is distinguished by the semantic capacity of her words, functions as a tool for metaphysical cognition, serves as a means of overcoming the problem of the “inexpressible”, and serves as a distinctive marker of existential experience. It has been established that the author’s new formations serve informative, emotive, constructive, and figurative functions, contribute to the achievement of impressive imagery, and embody the individual experience and worldview of the poet. Overall, the creation of lexical innovations is characterized by a shift from abstract and philosophical nominations in her early lyric poetry to existentially marked units in her later period.
